A few nights ago, I stupidly argued that Pentagram was particularly good at logotypes but didn’t have as many great marks as some firms, like Chermayeff & Geismar Associates. To prove me wrong, Pentagram collected, designed, and published a book of their best marks within a matter of days. They even created this grid of marks to really drive home their point. It seems extreme, but when they want to prove someone wrong, there are no limits at Pentagram.
You can profit from my foolishness, though. There is a paperback edition of Marks, or if you have time, money, and extra money on your hands, you can purchase a limited edition.
Michael Bierut designed an absolutely beautiful lapel pin, which reimagines the American identity. According to Pentagram’s web site, “Bierut’s typographic solution reorganizes the familiar ‘USA’ configuration into a monogram that displays its own kind of unity.”
